by Lea Ann Oliver Robertson Shelby County Historical Society and Museum

In 1986, Missouri Governor John Ashcroft created the “Missouri Century Club” in order to properly recognize its citizens who had attained the age of 100 years. Shelby County, Missouri has been home to many of these citizens and it has been celebrating them since long before Governor Ashcroft’s formal salute. One such festivity is the Old Settlers Reunion that has been celebrated annually since 1889. The creation of local Shelbyville businessmen, it was intended to promote a sense of community among its citizens and to appropriately honor its long-standing residents. The Old Settlers Reunion has customarily presented awards which include: Oldest Settler in the State of Missouri, Oldest Settler in Shelby County, and Oldest Person on the Grounds.

For several years the prize of Oldest Settler in Shelby County went to John L. Oliver of Shelbina. Mr. Oliver, one of Shelby County’s most widely recognized Centenarians, lived to be 108 years young. He was born in Greenbrier, Virginia in 1820 to Lemuel and Mary Ann Taylor Oliver. John and first wife, Nancy Louise Warren Oliver, were the parents of twelve (12) children, several of which spent their lives in Shelby County as well. His second wife, Pauline Metz Fitzsimmons Oliver (1834 – 1934) also lived to be 100 years young. Mr. Oliver, a veteran of the Union Army during the Civil War, is buried in the Shelbina Cemetery.
